What Working on Cruise Ships is Really Like: Pros & Cons

working on a cruise ship

In my three years onboard, I’ve been woken four times in the early morning hours between 2-5 a.m. To my emergency call, which I then had to run up 10 decks and the entire length of the ship to reach my response station. While this varies by company and possibly by job, ships generally pay for crew flights. But there were also many times in my three-year career at sea where it honestly felt like a living nightmare. You have to remember to leave out everything you will need on your final morning, including travel documents, passports, and the clothes you want to wear home.

With modern cruise ship internet access (especially Starlink), you should be able to participate in Zoom meetings, stream video, etc. But even the best ship internet can be spotty at times, so if you need the ability to do these things at specific times, it might not be the best choice. With the cruise industry continuing to expand, the opportunities for people looking for a career at sea are not going to dry up any time soon.

Latest Cruise Ship Jobs

It’s a good idea to be specific about what position you are looking for on the cruise ship. Putting “Any” under career objectives is a big no-no when applying for cruise jobs. The cruise lines generally want you to understand your strengths and apply for specific positions within the crew, even if you plan to move up later on.

He has been travelling and working abroad since 2008 and has more than 10 years of experience in online business, finance, travel and entrepreneurship. Cindy actually had interviews in Amsterdam and London with a rep from the cruise line. The interview won’t last long and you’ll be asked questions about your experience, plus they’ll be checking your English language ability. According to Indeed.com, Cindy’s job would currently pay just under $70,000 USD per year, which is a pretty amazing wage, especially considering that during work, everything is free on the ship. The Hotel Services Engineer is responsible for all aspects of Hotel maintenance utilizing the services of the tradesmen within his/her sub-department, as well as the electrical and ventilation departments.

This position supports a minimum of different restaurant and beverage outlets that contain exciting menus designed to match our numerous itineraries. Our Cruise Entertainment and Guest Program departments are multifaceted and incorporate a variety of teams that work together to create a captivating entertainment experience. We encourage high-quality entertainers, accomplished musicians, skilled production technicians, and knowledgeable lecturers to pursue opportunities to travel the world and delight our guests.

Therefore, as a company we strive to help give you all the necessary resources and comforts to enable you to take care of our guests – and yourself. For many crew positions, you won’t be able to request a specific ship or itinerary for several years. While guests might deal with seasickness by laying down in their cabins, crew members still need to be at their work areas operating the same as usual no matter what the weather or sea conditions are. Side note, if you’re a guest anywhere, please be a decent human to people providing you with services. I honestly don’t know what it is that makes some cruise guests the worst types of customers I’ve ever encountered, but it’s definitely helped me build up my patience and Resting “Are You Done” Face. As I mentioned above, some ships have separate messes, one for officers and staff and another for crew.

If you're curious about what my job is like, here are four fun facts about working on a cruise ship. Before landing a job like this one, I was working a normal 9-to-5 at a day care, and I was teaching, too. I'd just graduated college around the time of COVID, and I felt miserable. While not revealing specific figures, Royal Caribbean Group says its employee retention record is above the industry standard and crew members choose to stay with the company rather than jump ship to another line. These courses are held at a variety of land-based training centers that are focused on different aspects of crew training. For example, Royal Caribbean sends some staff to a dedicated training center for safety, hospitality and catering courses that is situated close to Manila.

What often takes the most time is getting down to the appropriate deck with your carry-on bags (or all of your bags if you opted for self disembarkation), since the elevators are always crowded on the final morning. Occasionally, an issue with clearing the ship delays passenger disembarkation and can create lines. That's why you should never book a flight too early on disembarkation day. Getting off the ship is more complicated, as you must follow a set of sometimes byzantine procedures. You cannot simply leave your cruise ship at any time on disembarkation day. However, like at a hotel, you will need to settle up financial matters on the last evening or first thing the next morning (more about that below).

Disney Cruise Photo Package What You Need to Know

disney cruise pictures

When it’s your turn, you approach the character, pose, and the photographer takes your picture. The photographer will scan your Key To The World card (your stateroom key) or DisneyBand+ to link your photo to your stateroom account. DCL does offer a photo book product, typically priced at $149.95 regardless of the length of your cruise. This seems like it would be a good deal, you get to have 30+ images for the typical price of a ten image photo download package. However, I have heard near universal complaints about the photo books – everything from missing pictures to extremely poor image and paper quality. You may just be better off buying the downloads and making your own photo book via one of the photo printing services mentioned above.

Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods

Our last cruise left from Miami, so we missed this opportunity. No Disney cruise would be complete without a picture with Mickey and his friends. You can find them all over the ship, so be sure to snap a pic with them whenever you see them. Obviously, Castaway Cay boasts many more photo opps.

CardMatch

For anyone who needs some relaxation after a day riding AquaMouse, Senses Spa offers a complete menu of spa treatments. For the first time, the space also has an outdoor area with loungers and hot tubs. On Disney Wish, the main pool deck features four tiered pools. As you can see in our first-look array of Disney Wish photos below, it's a vessel heavy on technology, as well as magic. Our mission is to help you save time and money on your vacation. Your TouringPlans.com subscription helps us to help you by funding new articles and research.

Favorite Disney Drinks & Snacks

I do know that you have to design your book at a kiosk while on the ship, and then they mail you the book after you get home. Other DCL guests are often happy to help with photography. The photographers themselves usually won’t do this. However, during some character greeting photo ops, there will be an assistant available who will be happy to use your camera to take a few shots. In my experience, they often don’t take much care to compose the shot well. They’ll get the job done, but it may not be pretty.

disney cruise pictures

However, you can’t combine a Disney Cruise Photo Package with two staterooms (with certain exceptions I will explain below). If you try and buy on the last evening of your cruise you are going to be with crowds of people and wait in a long line. It’s great also that you actually get a complete family or group photo. The borders around the photos are often just not to my taste. You really should have as many photos taken as you can just so you can see which ones you like. This is located on Deck 4 of all of the Disney ships (except Disney Wish).

Can I get Private Photo Session with a Disney Cruise Photographer? How much does it Cost?

This lets you access your photos via your phone, tablet or computer for free. Just ask a Shutters staff member for your access code and follow the instructions. You can only download one at a time which can take a while. There is an option to pre-order some items prior to your cruise by visiting mycruisephotos.com. I have never done this but I have heard that the packages are 15% cheaper than what you will find onboard but I cannot personally verify this.

Learn About Credit Cards

You can book portrait sessions in the Onboard Activities section of the DCL app after you’ve paid in full for your sailing and your booking window opens. There may also be opportunities to book this experience while you’re on the ship. This topic gives me an opportunity to annoy you all with one of my favorite DCL stories.

I am sure that one day soon that will change but at the moment there is no option to choose a different one. They have gone fully digital and your photos are all available to view on the Shutters kiosk. The lines for photography on a formal night on a Disney cruise are always the longest. If you want to receive every photo of every person in your party you will need to purchase one package per stateroom. I know that is a lot of information and I have probably left something out. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at , or ask in the comments below, and I will do my best to answer them.

This works out perfectly for my family since we usually get two rooms for our family of 5. They will be happy to take as many photos as you would like with their camera even if you have not purchased a photo package. They are banking on you seeing their professional photos, falling in love and wanting to purchase them. Refunds are available on pre-purchased packages; just make sure to request your refund before the deadline. The refund deadline varies by cruise so make sure to ask a photo team member onboard. The only packages that will save you money if you purchase before you sail are the ALL digital on a USB package and the photobook.

The photography on Disney Cruise Line is managed by a separate company called Shutters. They have photo opportunities set up all over the ship as well as at the terminal in Port Canaveral and at Castaway Cay. They take your photo which is then linked to your photo account through either facial recognition, by asking your room number, or by swiping your room key. At any time during your cruise, you can stop by Shutters (mid-ship, adjacent to the atrium) and view your photos. You can view them on a computer screen by swiping your room key at one of the kiosks during Shutters’ operating hours.

Note that the facial recognition software is not fool proof, so try and remember each time you have your photo taken and then make sure the photo shows up in your account. If you notice you are missing any photos, ask a Shutters employee to help you find it in the system and add it to your account. You might also see photos of other people in your account, which you can mark as not belonging to you and they will then no longer show up. In addition to the standard photo packages, DCL also has an onboard portrait studio. Private portrait sessions photos are not included in the regular packages. Prices are steep – starting at about $600 for a just a handful of images (though there is no fee to sit for the photo session).

Hopefully one of my readers can speak to that in the comments below. Even if you don’t want to preorder, visiting the site will give you access to some ideas of the prices for sailings within the next 2 months or so. In another example, I recently traveled on the Disney Wish with friends. They were in one stateroom and I (an adult) was in my own stateroom, but our reservations were linked and we ate dinner together and participated in some Port Adventures together.

Just ask the DCL photographers to snap a shot with your personal camera and they will gladly do so after they have taken a few with their fancy camera first. I personally would only pre-purchase a package if it were going to save me money or unless I just didn’t want to deal with doing it on the ship. Guests on board and ashore may even add a sprinkle of pixie dust to their trip pictures in the form of Mickey clouds.

My family tends to buy the photo package on every second or third sailing. On sailings where we know we’re buying the package, we make a game of seeing how many photos we can have the onboard photographers take of us. There is a small price break (often 10-15%) for buying your photo package online in advance of your trip. You can do this in the Cruise Activities activities section of the DCL website after you’ve paid in full for your sailing and your activity booking window has opened. (Activity booking windows are based on your Castaway Club status.) Advance photo booking must be completed at least three days prior to sailing in order to get the price break.

They have a digital facial recognition system which in theory puts all of your photos in your account so that you can view them on the kiosk. There you will find digital kiosks where you can view your photos. If you are interested in a private photo session while on your Disney Cruise, Shutters offers that in their onboard portrait studio. If you find you are taking more photos than anticipated and love them all, you can easily upgrade your package onboard by speaking with a member of the photo team. Here are some sample pre-purchase prices for different length sailings.

Cruising while single can get expensive since most cruise lines charge based on double occupancy. For single travelers, the best cruise line to travel on is Norwegian Cruise Lines. When visiting ports of call, Viking itineraries feature the highest average hours in port per day, which gives travelers extra time to explore destinations and their unique attractions.

Cunard

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year.

Silversea Cruises

Virgin Voyages cruise line is a great option for travelers who want to enjoy a cruise vacation tailored exclusively for adults. Its ships offer a wide variety of specialty dining options, from a food-truck style market with a burger shop, taco shack and sushi bar. For those staying in certain room tiers, a concierge team is available to help travelers with special requests and booking excursions. And while Disney cruises primarily cater to families, they aren’t just for kids. The ships offer nightclubs, bars and adult-only pools and dining, too, as well as special activities and clubs for teens. Carnival’s low fares and fun amenities make it a popular choice for those looking for a quick, affordable cruise (although it also offers longer trips to Europe, Australia and more).

Gratuities are not included for either the ship’s crew or the shoreside tour guides. Ama often has airfare specials and airport transfers included when you book airfare through the cruise line. Along with the impressive onboard amenities, like a planetarium and an onboard kennel, it becomes hard to compare the experience with cruising on most other cruise lines.

Although they’re known best for their Caribbean itineraries—good for a quick weekend getaway—Carnival also sails to many other destinations, including Europe, Mexico and Hawaii. The transatlantic cruise from Southampton to New York (a traveler’s must-do at any age) is a great option for older travelers because you never leave the ship. You’ll get to fully enjoy the spa, the lectures, the food and, of course, the formal gala nights, which are arguably the crowning glory of any Cunard cruise. This is the cruise that proves it’s all about the journey, not the destination. Just make sure to check this cruise packing list so you bring all the right things with you.

Guests can choose what works best for them, such as “gentle walking” tours with fewer stairs and even tours where the cruise line supplies a car at the end of the tour for guests too tired to make the walk back to the ship. This makes AmaWaterways one of river cruising’s best cruise lines for accessibility. Almost everything you need while on board is included in the cruise fare, even Wi-Fi -- just don’t expect it to be lightning fast.

While drinks, tips and all dining venues are included in the cruise fare, excursions are not. As with most luxury lines, the Seabourn dress code is a notch up from the mainstream ships. Royal Caribbean cruise fares are not inclusive, except for those in the highest-priced suite categories. Drinks and food beyond the complimentary options may be purchased a la carte onboard or as separate packages. Entertainment and most activities are included in the fare, but keep in mind that crew tips are not. Although recognized for its enormous mega-ships, Royal Caribbean’s fleet of 26 ships includes seven modest-sized ships for first-time cruisers who prefer to start small and work their way up.

Ships also have a living room where guests can gather to talk or relax while listening to classical music performed by resident musicians. "The cruise itself was absolutely perfect. Nice weather, great excursions, beautiful scenery, nice ship and excellent staff." For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Its ships cater to travelers looking for an entertaining, exciting getaway — with an emphasis on pools, waterslides, mini-golf and karaoke, plus comedy shows, casino games and nightclubs for adults. Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers an unrivaled experience for the most discerning travelers. All of its ships are truly all-inclusive, with complimentary unlimited shore excursions at its more than 500 ports of call. Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service. “For the most part, luxury cruises appeal to a segment of travelers looking for similar experiences on land – more luxurious offerings, fewer crowds, and phenomenal activities.

Accommodations are designed with families in mind by including privacy curtains, divided bathrooms and storage space in most staterooms. On board, your family will enjoy live shows that rival Broadway performances, evening fireworks displays and visits from popular Disney, Marvel and Star Wars characters. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research.

You can also link up with Sitka’s bus system (called The Ride) to get to trailheads and other areas. Haines doesn’t have a lot of cruise ships that call in its port, but it does have some. You can also visit Haines by taking a shore excursion when your ship calls in nearby Skagway. However you get there, Haines is worth a visit for plenty of reasons. Regardless of which ship you choose, Royal Caribbean’s Alaska expeditions promise “warm impressions of the wilderness,” meaning shore excursions and glacier viewings that prioritize comfort. Royal Caribbean also puts an emphasis on hearty, locally sourced food like wild-caught salmon, satisfying sourdough, and fresh-picked Alaska berries galore.

The Best Time to Cruise Alaska: Crowds, Weather and Cost Are All Factors

Selected itineraries combine the Canadian Rockies with an Alaska cruise. These packages include luxury accommodations at the Fairmont Hotels in Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper. The park encompasses six million acres of wilderness, home to unique Alaskan wildlife. If you want an Alaska itinerary with a chance to see wildlife, you must visit Denali.

While the Huna Totem Corporation and Norwegian Cruise Line are still developing Icy Strait, this port best suits those willing to pay for excursions. Once almost hunted to extinction, the protected species has grown in numbers, and you can enjoy them on an otter tour. Typical to fjords, the Misty Fjords National Monument contains steep cliffs surrounded by the lush Tongass Rainforest.

When is the best month to take an Alaskan Cruise?

But, most of these Alaska itineraries repeat the same cruise ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. Cruises that go one-way, or Gulf of Alaska cruises, sail further north but require a flight to get home. These one-way cruises may include College Fjord, Valdez, Kodiak Island, and either Seward or Whittier. Larger cruise ships only have access to South Sawyer Glacier, as North Sawyer or Sawyer Glacier has retreated, making the passage too narrow.

Scenic Cruising – Is Glacier Bay better than other scenic glacier cruising?

Between its straight-up Alaska cruises and Alaska Cruisetours, you have over 100 Holland America itineraries and seven ships to choose from. If I had to pick the three best Alaska cruise ports, it would be Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau. They all offer a different atmosphere and unique list of things to do.

A cruise along the coast anywhere in the state — especially in summer, the season of the Midnight Sun — is an excellent way to experience it. It’s probably impossible to say what the best cruise line to Alaska is, as everyone will have a different definition. Some may choose the most luxurious cruise line, while others the most affordable. Many people want to cruise on the giant ships with 3000 passengers because they have the most onboard entertainment, while others search out small intimate ships with less than 500 people that can visit smaller ports. Prince Rupert is in British Columbia Canada, but many cruises stop here on the way to Alaska. It is mostly visited by smaller cruise ships, but there is still the occasional large ship (1500+ passengers) that stops at Prince Rupert.

Cruise Line Options & Cruise Ships

The round-trip sailings have four or more sea days, a scenic day, port visits along the inside passage, and a call at either Vancouver or Victoria, British Columbia. Small, adventure-oriented ships offer alternative Alaska cruise itineraries that focus on lesser-touristed ports. These expedition sailings depart from Alaskan ports, such as Juneau, Sitka, or Ketchikan, and explore remote islands and wilderness areas. Disney Cruise Line set sail in 1998 with its first three- and four-night trips to the Bahamas and made its way to Alaska in the spring of 2011. The cruise line, which is celebrating its Silver Anniversary at Sea, offers 23 five-, seven-, eight- and 9-night round-trip Alaskan itineraries aboard the Disney Wonder, all of which depart from Vancouver.

Glacier Bay’s main advantage is that visitors will not just see one amazing glacier, but many. There are 8 major glaciers in Glacier Bay that still reach the water but over 1000 total glaciers in the National Park. Many of these glaciers have receded into the mountains (known as hanging glaciers) so there is less chance of seeing glacier calving activity, but it’s certainly still possible.

Scenic cruising

Seattle and Vancouver both provide travelers with a taste of cosmopolitan life mixed with natural elegance, laying down a picturesque prelude to the enthralling Alaskan landscapes and adventures that await on the journey ahead. The prime time to embark on an Alaska cruise is from April through October. Notably nicknamed “The Love Boat,” Princess Cruises offers an award-winning North to Alaska program that immerses guests in the history and beauty of the 49th state. Royal Carribean’s Princess, a 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers is one of the best cruises for couples. When packing for this 7-day adventure, don’t forget to include both casual and formal attire, as well as layers for the fluctuating temperatures you’ll encounter while cruising through the glaciers. This cruise boasts a range of balcony accommodations, The Sanctuary—an exclusive adults-only retreat, and Princess Luxury Beds in every cabin.

Only two large cruise ships a day can enter the park and must be accompanied by a park ranger. The scenic cruising lasts hours and often includes a commentary on the landscape, wildlife, and history. A one-way sailing, however, is best for cruisers who want to tack on extra vacation time on land to visit Denali National Park or the Kenai Peninsula. Moreover, most cruise lines also offer a cruise tour add-on for one-way sailings, which combine a three- to seven-night bus tour through Alaska with a weeklong cruise. Make the most of your cruise by keeping an eye out for pop-up sales that can save you even more money—you can even use those savings to indulge in a pre- or post-cruise tour. A trip to Alaska is at the top of many travelers’ bucket lists, and for good reason.

Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think. If you’re traveling on a small ship, your ship may call at Wrangell, Petersburg or go ashore at Bartlett Cove in Glacier Bay National Park. Learn more here about Wrangell, here about Petersburg and here about Glacier Bay.

Seeing a massive, multi storey, chunk of ice break-off and come careening down into the ocean is definitely something you’ll remember from your Alaska vacation. Cruising by glaciers such as, Dawes Glacier, Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier, is almost always part of the cruise itinerary. Marine wildlife such as whales, harbor seals and sea lions may be seen from your cruise ship. You will likely have to take a shore excursion to encounter bears or moose on your cruise. Every Alaska cruise will include stops in vibrant towns and cities with rich histories from their indigenous cultures and their gold rush past, there’s no way you can leave your cruise to Alaska unsatisfied. When reviewing the port days, most vessels stop at Juneau (the capital), Ketchikan, and Skagway.

From Seward, travelers wanting to spend a few days exploring Kenai Fjords National Park or one of the wilderness lodges can book Alaska Railroad transfers on their regular scheduled service. Alaska has been a popular cruise destination for decades, and the industry has continued a trajectory of growth. Each summer season there seems to be another cruise line sailing Alaskan waters, while the longtime incumbents are relentless in their addition of new itineraries, amenities, and excursions.
