People are working from home out of preference, not just necessity

During COVID-19 close to 70% of full-time workers are working from home. Since 2020 people have been meeting by video calls 50% more since COVID-19. Out of 2000 activities, only 800 activities have the most significant potential for remote work. Although remote work became the new normal in 2020, remote working was common even before Covid-19. According to Global Workplace Analytics, the number of people working from home has risen by 159% in the US since 2009. Employees are less likely to work a full 8 hours from the office (12%) than from home (14%). More people are choosing to work from home because they want to, even if their office is open and they're less concerned about Covid risks, according to new findings from Pew Research Center.

Some companies, like Bank of America, have recently changed their policies to force workers to go into the office more often, perhaps to make sure they do not become too disconnected from their colleagues. People who do not feel their ideas are valued at work have a mental health score 14 points below the average. Working from home has many benefits including less office space costs for employers. The numbers tell the story and it looks like the remote worker trend will continue. Remote workers are more productive because they have no commute, less or no office small talk, fewer distractions, more time for family, exercise, a higher quality of life, and better overall work-life balance. 59% of respondents said they would be more likely to choose an employer who offered remote work compared to those who didn’t.

In this period, the state’s rate of people working from home jumped from the bottom 15 to No. 3 in the U.S. This makes sense, as most IT work can be completed easily in a remote work environment. Other top industries for remote workers include Accounting & Finance, Customer Service, Healthcare, Marketing, Education, and Sales. Turnover reduces by 50% when employees have access to a remote work option. From 2018 to 2021, the number of fully remote workers grew 4x larger.

Education

This same report found that ​only 36% of people believe the office is best suited for individual work. Fully 86% of workers who are not working exclusively from home – either by choice or because they can’t work remotely – say they have at least some in-person interactions with other people at their workplace. Among these workers, 52% say they are at least somewhat concerned about being exposed to the coronavirus from the people they interact with at work, including 20% who areveryconcerned. A similar share (48%) say they are either not too or not at all concerned. Most U.S. workers (60%)don’thave jobs that can be done from home, and others who do have these types of jobs are going into their workplace at least sometimes. For a large majority of these workers, their jobs continue to involve at least some in-person interaction with others at their workplace.

83% say remote work enables them to create a better work-life balance, while as much as 79% of them are less stressed working remotely. Even those who own a computer cannot understand how to use online collaboration tools or any other applications. Fearing they cannot do their work online and their employer will find them out — most refused to work from home.

Upwork key remote work statistics indicate that over 24% of organizations say they are much more willing to hire freelancers than before. Another 33% say they are somewhat more likely to use external services to do work. Nonetheless, 30% are still hesitant, while 13% are less likely to use outside help than before. In fact, they go well beyond video communication and collaboration tools — the business world already has adapted these during the pandemic.

Since the first quarter of 2020 remote work trends and expectations have changed. Employers weren’t prepared for their entire workforce to work from home but thanks to technology and innovation it’s working out well for many employers. Of those residents of London who did some work at home, 91.6% cited the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as their main reason for doing so. Conversely, the North East (76.6%) and the South West (79.1%) were the two regions where respondents were least likely to cite the coronavirus pandemic as the main reason for homeworking. For those new to working from home, the pandemic-related shift to telework has changed some things while leaving others relatively the same.

Some 47% of Democrats and Democratic leaners who are not exclusively working from home think their employer should require employees to get a vaccine, compared with just 10% of Republican and Republican-leaning workers. In turn, 53% of Republicans say their employer should neither require nor encourage employees to get vaccinated; only 10% of Democrats say the same. The survey also asked employed adults who are not working exclusively from home what they think their employershould dowhen it comes to COVID-19 vaccinations, regardless of what their employerisdoing. Three-in-ten say their employer should require the vaccine, while most (69%) say their employer should not (including 39% who say their employer should encourage but not require it and 30% who don’t think their employer should do either).

As of 2022, 26% of U.S. employees now work remotely, which is four times the number who worked remotely before. By 2025, there could be as many as 36.2 million Americans working remotely. Since 2020, the number of women working remotely has increased by 23%. And other common benefits cited by employees include reduced stress (57%), reduced absences (56%), improved morale (54%), and fewer sick days (50%).

After COVID-19 92% of people surveyed expect to work from home at least 1 day per week and 80% expected to work at least 3 days from home per week. Less time spent commuting to and from work allowed more workers to relax and focus on their jobs. As a result of not having to worry about getting to work on time, workers can start their days on a positive note and show more enthusiasm for their work. 10,000 employees surveyedby the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago said they thought they were just as productive working from home compared to working in the office.

The flexibility of remote work may explain the decline in work-from-home employees in Wyoming. In fact, Wyoming’s population grew by 0.3% between April 2020 and July 2021, according to the Census Bureau. And employers realize this despite the few disadvantages that come with remote work. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, remote work is now more common than ever.

By state, Wyoming saw the largest year-over-year decrease in the rate of remote workers, dropping from 24.6% in October 2021 to 14.9% in October 2022. That’s a decrease of 39.4%, placing it as the state with the second-lowest rate of remote workers in 2022. Although some have returned to the office, remote work is here to stay for others. 62% of workers feel remote work positively affects their work engagement.

Overall, according to Pew, about 1 in 5 in-person workers say their employer has a vaccine requirement in place. Beyond vaccines, public health officials stress that indoor masking, social distancing, good hygiene and staying home when sick are all ways to minimize the spread of Covid-19. Importantly, the majority of workers, 60%, don't have jobs that can be done from home. About half of those who work in-person say they're concerned about being exposed to Covid, according to Pew, a share that hasn't budged since October 2020. A much smaller share, 14%, say their primary reason to return to offices is because they're worried about losing work opportunities while at home; 9% say they feel pressured to from their boss or coworkers.
